SATURDAY NIGHT

FEBRUARY 12, 2000

By Mayer Fertig

No time wasted after Shabbat.  Out the door to Ben Yehudah street to buy stufff. Lots of stuff.  We spent quite a bit of time in one particular store where Nachum provided an amazing display of finesse as a negotiator. He walked out with an armload of tzotchkes (much like the prizes we offer to marathon donors), and all he had to do was promise Danny Boy (top, right) to put his picture up on the internet. That, of course, is a joke. He paid cash on the barrelhead -- just not as much as Danny Boy had hoped.

Later Mayer, Mattes, Mark and Robert retired to Burger King -- a first for all of us.  Good food, if you like that sort of thing. We noted that a kosher Burger King of that quality in New York could well put some established restaurants, serving somewhat less-edible food, out of business.

While we were there we celebrated Robert's birthday and crowned him King for the Day (right, third from top).

Late Motzei Shabbat (Saturday night), Robert, Meir and Mayer accompanied Nachum to a role reversal: He was the guest -- the interviewee -- on a popular overnight radio program in B'nei Brak (spelled Bene Braq on those wacky Israeli road signs).

The host of the show, Menachem Tucker (below, second from left), was more than a little excited to have THE Nachum Segal in his studio.  Long drive there, long drive back -- but fun. For more, see Meir Weingarten's reflections on the evening -- when he gets around to writing it (you know he's really busy running this whole operation).
